Happy 4th Folks!

Happy 4th of July people!

I cant make it a long post today, got a lot goin' on. Not too many people have seen this, though it's an older drawing. I did this as a convention sketch ...well it started out as one. They asked for a Tunnel Rat, a GI Joe character, that I've rarely been able to draw in the book. I immediately thought of this and pictured it exactly in my head. So, instead of just doing a sketch I drew it out the way I was visualizing it and before I knew it, I basically had drawn this as a cover for the guy.

Well, it was his lucky day. It's still one of my favorite GI Joe commissions that I've done because it really captures the character and his specialty in the Joe-verse.

Jason Smith had Clayton Brown ink the commission!

  1. Very cool piece. Tunnel Rat is definitely underused in the universe.

  2. There is a group of about 6-10 Joes that are just awesome, and can really shine if handled right. But on their own have never really been that top 13 characters that are always used. I would put Tunnel Rat, Lowlight, Breaker, Alpine, Quick Kick, Flash, Ace, etc... But I guess I never would have thought Chuckles could be cool, and the Cobra book proved that.

  3. Awesome, and I agree with you on the underused joes. Happy to see Alpine showing up recently :)

  4. Quick Kick was handled so badly in the cartoon, i don't think others will give him a chance. Lowlight is awesome. Would love to see your take on both of those

  5. Thank you again for doing that piece for me. I was actually torn between Tunnel Rat and Beachhead on which one to ask but that cover you did of TR and Scarlet for GI Joe just came out and that made the decsion for me. Still have that one hanging on my wall next to the Beachead you did later on. I also did get it inked by Clayton Brown of your suggestion http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=635588&GSub=79328

As for under used Joes, Low Light is awesome and I want to get a commish of him someday (Need to get you back down here to one of the Florida conventions Robert.), and I was also partial to Big Ben I think its his being not only a Joe but in the S.A.S that makes him cool to me.

  6. I'd be happy to have a Breaker, Flash, or Ace in my book from you...

  7. I always thought that Quick Kick could have been a great character if developed right... He would have been a nice counter balance to the whole ninja craze in the book. He could have had a skeptical attitude towards all of the ninja mysticism in the series, echoing what was going on in some fans' heads. His "costume" was so ridiculous, though, it kind of ruined any chance to treat the character seriously.

Though, he did get to join the "Down 'n' Dirty" group during the Springfield assualt...

  8. I think Quick Kick was definitley underused. I like your take on him being the counter to all the ninja hype. And believe me, I love a few ninjas. But he could have been used a lot better than in the cartoon. I have him on my list for the year's sketch challenge and I will approach it with a redesign I think.

  9. OOO!! A redesign of Quick Kick from you is something I would definitely like to see. Actually if you have any other Joes on the list that have not been redesigned yet that might be theme you can shoot for in your challenge.
