End of an Era...

In the small scale, era being about 30 days, then yes this is the end of X-Men month. I know...sad. In the broader sense, I think this costume and especially the combination sketch with Jean represents for me one of the best generations of X-Men books. I think for pure story quality and character creation the Byrne years are my favorite. For the art and adding excitement and exposure to the property the 90's will win hands down. X-Men #1 by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee sold over 8 million copies in 1991. Now 20 years later it's being re-released and re-colored. It's the book that won't quit. On top of that, this era spawned a cartoon series that really expanded the awareness of the X-Men. All month, I've heard so many fans comment that this character or that villain was their favorite of the cartoon. People who aren't even reading comics know who these characters are. I find that fascinating, and just adds to the notoriety of the characters.

With this Cyclops sketch, he is hands down my favorite X-Men. This is my favorite look for him, and I felt the pressure to get it just right. I started and restarted this sketch 3 times before I did this one. Still, especially combined with Jean, I am happy with the result. For me this combo image is how I like to remember X-Men the best.

Phoenix quite the appropriate name...

Characters that die and come back to life have become a joke in the comics industry. For the longest time the Dark Phoenix saga was one of the most impactful character deaths in comics until that time. Considering Jean Grey's Phoenix name and power, I never minded when she came back. I never cared for Cyclops' reaction to it in regards to Madylene Pryor, but that aside I was glad Jean was back alive and back with Scott.

In early 2000's when she died again, I stopped reading X-Men. For a looooong time. There's a lot of speculation when she'll come back. And again, I wouldn't mind it, it's her name's sake as the Phoenix. For the sketch today I went with her 90's Jim Lee designed costume. Mostly because I hadn't draw her in this costume before, but also this is going to be a book end piece with my Cyclops that Im doing tomorrow.

To Arch or not to Arch? That is the question...

Another character here I wanted to thank for all the feedback. I had two options for the character of Angel. Either his original natural winged form or his Archangel, metal winged form.  I've always preferred his original wings, aesthetically they are just more appealing to draw. But I can see how being Archangel gives him much more offensive capabilities.

I've heard from quite a few people that think Angel in his original form is ridiculous and he doesn't offer much for powers. I looked up his abilities and was surprised to see how extensive they are.

"Angel's primary power is that of natural flight, due to his large feathered wings. His wings have superhuman strength, and they have a very flexible skeletal structure that enables him to press them to the back of his torso and legs with only the slightest bulge visible under his clothing. His bones are hollow, his body processes food more efficiently than a normal human body and does not store any excess fat, and he possesses a greater proportionate muscle mass than normal. As a result, his strength, speed, agility, endurance, reflexes, eyesight, and hearing are at their peak. Elements of his anatomy are comparable to those of birds. His superhumanly sharp eyes can withstand high-speed winds which would damage the average human eye. He can breathe at high velocities or altitudes, and he can cope with the reduced temperatures at high altitudes for prolonged periods of time, giving him a greater-than-normal capacity to endure low temperatures in areas such as the Arctic. The strength in his natural wings can easily break a man's arm or leg, or even put someone through a wall."


Pretty cool stuff, and there have been some great stories that really show his agility and fighting abilities. Angel is one of my favorite X-Men when it comes to the visuals.

There were enough requests for Archangel that I'll add him to the years list down the road. I couldnt fit in every X-Men I wanted to draw in 30 days. So there'll be a few more throughout the year.

Iceman....the mutant, not the Val Kilmer kind.

Iceman for today, and we are really coming down to the end of it. Just a few more of the original X-team and we'll be wrapping up X-Men Month.

While I do like the character, Iceman hasn't ever had that stand out story since I've been reading. I remember a time during Bastion's Operation Zero Tolerance where he seemed to be integral to the story. But for me his last big moment was when he first revealed that he could manipulate his ice form in this John Romita Jr. drawn story.

Even though he isn't my favorite character, or I don't see him used that much lately, he does have a great visual look and everyone seems to know who he is. Probably from Spiderman and His Amazing Friends!

The real McCoy...

Whew, project finished...well my part anyway. Finally got a chance to give some attention to the X-men resident genius and happy go-lucky Beast!

I've always really enjoyed this character. I loved the duality of his intellect with his main power set being so physical. Of all the transformations these characters have gone through, I think when he went from a more human form to this version was a stroke of genius. It added so many new elements to his character and a uniqueness to his appearance. 

Interesting then that his new "cat" form drives me so crazy. He went from more feral and ape-like to a blue lion of sorts. I never quite understood the necessity of his transformation, as it didn't add anything to his character. Emma Frost's new diamond form that came about during the same story arc involving a second mutation, made some sense. She acquired a new power set, but with Beast I just miss the old days I guess. 

This was treat to do, like the Colossus and Nightcrawler sketches, it was nostalgic and fun to draw such a distinct looking character.

X-Men: The Real First Class!

I had Professor X on my list, and I was thinking through what I could do to make him look cool. I was thinking of some crazy angle and him holding his head in concentration as power was blasting out....I just thought it wasn't what I was in the mood for.  So I got to thinking what I like most about the Prof. It's not his mental abilities, it's that he took his time and resources to reach out and help children.

For all the drama and history that  has been drudged up about Charles Xavier in the last few years of story, I put that aside and remember him in the early years. This is my "ideal" Xavier.  I know he isn't perfect, and I don't expect him to be. But I want to think of him as noble and nurturing, helping along those mutants that are coming into their powers and mentoring them.  I tried to capture that.  This was a simpler time, the book was fun and exciting. Plus this sketch gave me a chance to show the original team. For the next 5 days I will be drawing the original team line up until the last day of Sept. and the end of X-Men Month.

For those interested in these kind of stories, but don't like reading the dated books from the 60's, there is a new X-Men First Class book. This came out a few years ago, well before the recent movie. It takes the students you see above when they are starting out and fills the gaps of stories from the original series. I think it's written very well by Jeff Parker and the majority of art by Roger Cruz.

British Ninja Time

Thanks for all the feedback. On an earlier post I asked which version of Psylocke people wanted to see. She was originally a British woman, who is the sister of Captain Britain himself. Then in 1989 Uncanny X-Men 250-251 she was gone from the books for a few issues. When she returned it was revealed that she was captured and brainwashed by the Ninja clan, the Hand. During her capture she was altered and come from that as a Asian woman with Ninja abilities. She now has a telekinetic ability where she can form a psychic knife.

I've only ever really read her in this form, so I was leaning for the ninja version of Psylocke. But I was surprised at how many asked for the British version as well. When it came down to it, I counted up the comments here and emails and Ninja version won out.

Blast from the Past!

I gotta admit, this is a bit before my time. But I don't deny the awesome. Just the fact that Dazzler would attempt to fight for the cause of mutants with Xavier's X-men in ROLLER SKATES, she demands respect. heh.

This is a sketch for my good friend Christopher Giles. He's been following my work from easily 5 or 6 years ago when I was first breaking in to the industry and just out of school. Christopher co-hosts a great podcast called GI JOE: REVIEW. They are reviewing the original Marvel run of GI JOE and give their commentary on the books from the 80's. I also came across Christopher on the Uncanny X-Cast message boards with the screen name "Dazzler-Fan".  He has a previous Dazzler sketch from me in her New Excaliber costume, I think he got it from me about 4 years ago at a Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC. I actually do like that costume, but this is the original disco queen throw back. So a big "Thanks" for all your support Christopher, I hope you enjoy it!

Ring that Belle...

There have been two eras of X-Men history that I've really enjoyed Rogue's character. As appearing here in this sketch, I like reading her in Jim Lee's run on X-Men through the early 90's. Then again just a few years ago when written by Mike Carey. Knowing her character 20 years ago, I wouldn't have expected to see her become a team leader, but that goes to show how these characters can evolve.

I always liked that her power allowed her to adopt other mutant's powers, seeing her blast out Cyclops' eye beams was pretty cool. But I never really liked the visual when she appropriates the other physical characteristics, like Nightcrawler's blue skin or Colossus metal body. Just personal preference I guess.

I don't think I'm alone though when I say I think she was at her best in this costume...

Summers Brothers Part 1

Havok, He's another character that I've been intriqued by, but I don't think he's given his due. Always playing second fiddle to Scott (Cyclops), his brother, it's a hard role to find yourself in with the X-Universe.

The costume I used here is the one he wore in the late 90's during his X-Factor run that Jeff Matsuda drew. I was collecting just about every X-title back then and actually remembered enjoying this. I went back to look through those books and I dont know if they hold up so well. Even the design for this costume seemed to change from panel to panel....and its not the most difficult costume to draw. One of the things I've always liked about Havok's costume is the black "void" that shows just a sillhouette with the circular power cutting through it. I liked that this costume had that effect from his original but was a little more modern with out that crazy head gear he used to have.

Nathan Christopher Charles Askani-son Summers, or just Cable for short

I tell you this character sums up the convolution that is the X-Men history. Cable's background is about as long winded and ridiculous as his name, but danged if I don't love this character. He's gone though quite a few different versions of costumes and roles within the X-Men universe.

Boiled down from a VERY long story-short, Cable is the son of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Madylene Pryor, and as an infant was sent to the future to be raised. He returned as a grown man in his late 40's or early 50's by appearance, and went on to lead the New Mutants and X-Force.  Trust me that IS the incredibly short version.

I followed the Cable series for quite a while and really enjoyed it. I think Cable works best as a team leader, as he can pull from his experience and training that he received in the war torn future fighting Apocalypse. I like it when he has those moments with Cyclops and they both acknowledge their father-son relationship. While it's been addressed, I'm still waiting for the story or mini-series that has just the two of them working together as a backward father and son and really establish their relationship. Lots of potential I think. Too often Cable is story fodder and hasn't recently been given the opportunity to lead in the way I think he could.

As far as which costume to choose, I read him most during the mid-late 90's and he was getting past his HUGE gun and shoulder pad phase. He had this costume or a slight variation of it for nearly 8 years, and it was the costume requested most. Though, I'll post the alternative I could have gone with right here below.....

First, think of the X-Men in the 90's. Now think of their rockin' hair dues. Who jumps to mind?

My man Bishop sporting the mulleted jheri curl for all to see! I think I spent as much time inking his hair as he probably took getting it ready each morning. There's 30 min. gone.

I actually really like this character, though he might have the most dated costume of the 90's. I'd like to hear who else's costume just screams late 80's 90's from the team or villains. For those who don't know Lucas Bishop came from the future in an attempt to change events to alter the state of his present time. I like the incarnations of the character when he is portrayed as a cop or officer. Though in recent years he's taken a down turn and almost turned to a villain of sorts.

I think he's a character with a lot of potential in the main team, but he's rarely had a chance to showcase it with a story that does him justice.

Magnetos or Magnetoes?

How do you spell a plural Mageneto?

Anyway,  I inked this up for today's sketch. And I say today but again its 4:30 in the morning on Mon. I'm still on a tight deadline, so I won't go on and on. I have two drawings of Magneto here and I want your feedback on which you think works better. The only difference is the shadow on his eyes, but it's curious how that little thing changes the mood of the drawing and his character a bit. I'll be getting Simon to color this up, and I want to know which you all prefer.

You gotta WIP it, WIP it good....

Okay, Im completely delirious. I've been drawing for about 14 hours. Thats not including my breaks. I've got a deadline I really have to catch up on, and as soon as I post this I will immediately fall asleep.

Because of that, Im going to hold off inking this until tomorrow. Good chance to show a W.I.P. (work in progress) This is my underdrawing. I will adjust a few things I see even now in the inking stage. This is penciled with a 4h pencil. After I scan it, I multiply the layer 4 or 5 times to darken the scan, then adjust the levels to knock out the gray.

Alright, I seriously need to stop typing because I can't keep my eyes open.

Who needs Milk....Hey Jason Aaron, Got Mystique?

I've actually really liked the Mystique character. I've never been a huge fan of villians, but Mystique is a very versatile character. For obvious reasons, you can literally make her be anyone. I've liked her most though in the Sean McKeaver run of the self-titled Mystique book. She seemed like a cool superspy type character, on top of all her history. Another more classic version of Mystique I like was in the Jason Aaron Wolverine arc titled "Get Mystique" This story was drawn by the amazing Ron Garney, certainly worth the  $6 you can get it for at Instock Trades.

This sketch just kept evolving. It started with the pose for her, I was going for something a little more challenging. Even in my sketches I like to try and tell a bit of story when possible. It made me think if I got to draw a Mystique title how would I render her transitions to other forms? This would be fun to experiment with more for sure.

Man, I tell you I never got Mr. Sinister, but I still like him. He makes for a pretty good bad guy, but mostly because I don't know if he's just crazy or brilliantly demented. I get that he had a fascination with Scott and Jean, and his genetic experimentation. But something about him just weirded me out. Then I realized it was the way he looked.

I liked his design in my head, or what I recalled it to be. Then I started to draw it. Is he wearing shoes over boots? Is he wearing fabric shoulder pads over a metal shirt? Why does his cape look like vertical blinds?

Who is this guy and why is he so darn cool?

Wolverine Lite...

I put up the quick question on my Facebook account who I should draw next. Sabretooth or Mr. Sinister.  Ol' Toothy here took the early lead, but right towards the end I was surprised to see the number of Sinister fans out there. Even my son wanted me to draw Mr. Sinister, but I think that was because he didn't know what that character looked like.

At any rate, here is Victor Creed a.k.a. Sabretooth. Basically what Wolverine would become if he gave into his crazy rages and had no morality to speak of. From the begining, Sabretooth has been around to plague Wolverine's history. 

I've always liked the character, and again I'm amazed at how much of my opinions of these characters were formed through the X-Men cartoon. In episode 1, the very first shot is Sabretooth rampaging in the streets. I'm thinking about doing a full on Wolverine week and spotlighting his various incarnations. One of which, I would really like to do his Dept. H team with Wolverine, Sabretooth and Maverick in their black and yellow ops gear. 

One of the best confrontations of Wolverine and Sabertooth though can be found HERE .  A story called Old Soldiers by Chris Claremont and drawn by Alan Davis (one of my personal favorite artists!)

Mutant Target Identified....Initiate Capture!

I was looking for Sentinel reference through my X-Men books and realized they aren't as prominent as I thought. I can remember a few notable arcs where the Sentinels were used in some form. X-Men Civil War had some redesigned Sentinels, and Grant Morrison's run used "Wild Sentinels" created from salvaged parts. Through their various incarnations, it's nearly always been Bolivar Trask that has been involved in creating and improving them.

After looking it up, I realized there have been MarkI - Mark VIII designs, but that doesn't include the Wild Sentinels or Bastion's Prime Sentinels. For me though, I think again it harkens back to the 90's cartoon. The very first episode was "Night of the Sentinels" and the season ends with an attack on the Sentinel factory when they fight Master Mold.

I guess I should have come up with something witty to say, but instead without thinking, I started typing and took it real seriously... I AM a nerd.

Side note: I also wanted another chance to draw Cyclops! Whooot.

There is a great ALL AGES book put out by Marvel called "Sentinel". You can find collected editions here at INSTOCK TRADES. 

It's written by Sean McKeaver and drawn by Udon Studios. A fun story about a young boy who finds a broken Sentinel. He able to tinker it back together and reprogram it to become a friend.

'CAUSE I'M THE JUGGERNAUT MITCH!

Mitch's last words, "So Mr. Marko....why are you angry all the time?

I wanted to make sure Juggernaut got on the list, he is just one of those classically HUGE comic book characters. I don't get the chance to draw this kind of character that often. No one is this big in GI JOE, as they keep to more realistic proportional people.

One of the coolest things about the Juggernaut, aside from being Professor X's step-brother, is that he actually isn't a mutant. This is old news for all you X-fans, but I always found it interesting that in a world of mutants and other reasons for superpowers, it would have been incredibly easy to just say that Cain Marko is another mutant who is abnormally huge and ridiculous strength. Instead, the origins of his power is the ancient Gem of Cyttorak. It imbues him with the power and strength of the Juggernaut. His silly looking helmut, is what protects him from mind attacks. Although it is silly, its the defining characteristic of his costume and what makes him so recognizable.

One of the other cool things about the Juggernaut is that he has always been used throughout the Marvel universe as a general strong bad guy. He has popped up in Amazing Spiderman, and that remains on of my favorite Spiderman issues drawn by John Romita Jr.

Sunspot a.k.a. "I fell asleep and need someone quick to draw".....

Well, so this can happen from time to time in my job. I typically watch my kids in the mornings. I might get some work done in the afternoon for a few hours, but the majority of my work is done from about 9pm -3 or 4 am. Thats a general work day for me Mon-Sat. I get up around 7:30 am so that doesnt allow for too much sleep on a regular basis.

It's been known to catch up with me, and last night was one of those times. Knowing this about myself, I put in a "failsafe" character periodically throughout the year. Sunspot here is one of my failsafe characters. You can probably see why. I woke up, yelling "Oh my Stars and Garters!" realizing I had slept through my sketch of the day. So if you'll forgive a tired dude, Here is my sketch for yesterday.  I know its a cop out, Shane you dont have to rub it in.

I will do an extra kick but sketch later to redeem myself.

Ah, 90's nostalgia. sigh. That was a quote from the old X-Men cartoon. Apocalypse says that, and my brothers and I quoted it all the time to each other. heh.

So I'm kicking off X-Men:Villians for the next week or so. First up, one of the first recorded mutants in history. Apocalypse has a crazy background. He actually grew up in Ancient Egypt and has since created technology to keep him alive. I'm not entirely sure of his complete list of powers. What his mutant powers are vs. the powers of the armor he wears? Either way he's pretty formidable, and he was the central villian in one of the best X-Men stories told: Age of Apocalypse! When it came out you had to collect 4 or 5 different titles and match them all up, read them in the correct order. Man, it was confusing. But now you can buy it in this nice 4 volume series. C'mon Cyke, Just Blast a dude!

After much deliberation....well about 5 min. I decided I'm going to do two Cyclops drawings for this month. I know, I know, how is that fair and wouldn't everyone rather see another character instead of Scott twice.  Well, I dont care about that.  heh.

I got on this kick of doing the Giant Size X-Men team (*side note: I never want to type Giant Size again, it's getting incredibly old) and I realized Cyclops is on just about every iteration of the team. My personal favorite costume for Scott Summers is the 90's Jim Lee version. I think that is a general consensus. But I didn't want to leave him hanging with the team I spotlighted this week. So I will be doing another Cyclops towards the end of the month. Plus, I've already gotten requests to buy the art for him and I figure this way there is more to go around.

Quick rundown on how the rest of the month will go. Starting tomorrow and through the week I am doing Villians! For all you that love the bad guys, its a chance to focus on them. After that I will have a few days of some X-characters that are a little off to the side so-to-speak. Characters from the auxilery teams like X-Force, and New Mutants. Domino, Cable, CannonBall, Dazzler, Madrox, Havok then we get into the home stretch of that most notable core team. Generally, I will just pick my favorite costume to show them in. However, if there is a public out cry to put Havok in his new costume or his old, I'll do what people speak up about.

First off- Im going to put two questions out there:

1. Angel or Archangel?
2. Ninja Psylocke or British Psylocke?

If I do both versions of either or both of those, it will bump a pretty notable character (hero or villian) off the list. So post in the comment section below which you would prefer.

X-Men Colors!

Quick Special Announcement post.

Simon Gough, the colorist on Snake Eyes for IDW publishing, will be coloring up this month's X-Men sketches for me.  At the end of the month I will be offering prints. So for those of you that missed out on the original or just want a colored version of your favorite characters, will have a chance to get an 11x17 print available towards the end of Sept and early Oct.

X-Men Colors - 064

Proudstar vs. Bravestarr....who wins?

I'd actually like to see that fight, the ultimate native american character battle. But just Warpath vs. Bravestarr, without his robot horse man to fight with him.

I've always seen James Proudstar a.k.a. Warpath in the X-Men or X-Force books he's been in. I never really connected with him for whatever reason. I wrote him off and found him forgettable at the end of the day.

As I was researching him for this sketch, I was looking into the stories he was a part of and what his mutant powers were. GOOD GRIEF!?! why isn't this guy sooo much cooler? There's no reason for it.

Here are his powers:
Superhuman physical ability in virtually all areas:

He possesses superhuman strength (used as his main power in X-Force, as the team 'strong guy') He even fought with and managed to hold his own against the Juggernaut.

He possesses superhuman resistance to injury, at least enough to withstand short-range firepower, grenade explosions, and even a direct telekinetic attack. He also repairs and regenerates damaged and destroyed tissue much faster than a normal human, as well as revives and recuperates from exhaustion and fatigue much faster than a normal human.

He possesses superhuman agility & flexibility, surpassing Olympic levels of reaction time and ability.

His power of flight was discovered by his one-time mentor and team leader Peter Wisdom.  In the X-Men: Messiah Complex storyline has shown him to return to using his flight powers. In X-Force he can be seen flying even for long distances. 

Warpath's senses, particularly sight, smell and hearing, are enhanced to levels beyond the capabilities of a normal human. He is able to see with perfect clarity at much greater distances than an ordinary human. He retains this same level of visual clarity, even in near-total darkness. His hearing is similarly heightened, enabling him to both clearly hear sounds that ordinary humans can't and sounds that they can detect but at much greater distances.

After nearly getting killed by Reignfire, Warpath experienced an increase in senses and speed that allowed him to perform feats he had previously not been aware he was capable of, such as run at high speeds up to at least 90 mph for long distances and quickly climb building walls by rapidly digging his hands and feet into the bare concrete.

WTFun!?!




I mean seriously, I want to be this guy. Let alone read a story about him! He has had some pretty good moments, I even like the addition of the Vibranium Bowie knives. So I've put him here in his brother's classic Giant Size X-Men costume, (which Warpath wore when he was first in X-Force aswell) but I added the more recent knives because I can and because I think they are cool.

Could I fly if I screamed really loud?

If that was the case my son would never be earth bound. I dont know what changed, about 3 months ago my son loves to play and run around and SCREAM....just because, for the heck of it. Its fun and playful, he's not hurt or anything. He just likes to scream when he plays. Its a good thing he's not a mutant, I'd never keep him on the ground.

At any rate, today is our Irish pal Sean Cassidy a.k.a. the Banshee! Another member of that new international X-Men team from the  70's. (you can tell by his wicked side burns and funky disco collar!) I put him slightly above Thunderbird and Sunfire on that team, and when those two died or left the team no one really noticed. So that's not saying much for Banshee. I never really understood the purpose of this character, and I dont know that Chris Claremont did that much either. He kind of fell by the wayside for quite a while.

Plus think of it practically, would you want someone on your team that just screams....ALL THE TIME your fighting. How could they concentrate, I wouldn't bring him along on missions either. Still he's one of the classics, and I can't help but have a soft spot for the character.
