GI JOE Yearbook Snake Eyes...

In an effort to catch up on my blog I'll be posting these fairly quick headshots. They're not that large I did them all together on an 11x17 in a row. They were used as the images that were put on badges for the VA Comic Con.

Just a series of quick posts, there probably won't be much commentary for these. Except I realized they look a lot like year book pictures.

Commando Snake Eyes...

Here's Snake Eyes Completely Commandoed out. Hmmm. I don't think "Commadoed" is a word...but you get what I mean. There's nothing Ninja about him in this get up. Finally got the inks done on this long over due convention commission for my friend Jon. Here's the link to the pencil underdrawing.

http://robertatkinsart.blogspot.com/2011/11/snake-eyesgoin-commando.html

I think it's pretty obvious I was tired when I penciled this sketch. Im sure it was a typical convention, Im usually up to 3-4 am sketching away trying to get these all done before I leave the show. Well sometimes I should quit while I'm ahead. You can tell for two reasons that I was tired. First because I started inking his head and then immediately messed up by dropping my pen on the paper on the nozzle of his gun. Second, count the number of fingers on his right hand....yeah there's 6.
Check please, time for bed.

So finally, I had a break in pages and I was able to finish the inking and try to fix the mistakes I had already made due to sleepiness.

Snake Eyes Commando Commission - 325

This is a good example of the Convention sketches you can get from me at most Comic shows.
They are 11x17 and are $150 for this year's con season. I also do a 9x12 for $75, This Zartan is a good example of my smaller commissions:

I will be attending these coming shows!

Project Comic Con - St. Louis - June 9-10th

Heroes Con - Charlotte, NC - June 22-24th

Canadian Joe Con - Toronto - August 11th

Cincinnati Comic Expo - Cincinnati Ohio - Sept. 22-23rd

NYCC - New York, NY - Oct. 11-14th

You can email me before the show for pre orders. I especially advise that for the Canadian Joe Con since it's just one day and I can only sketch out so many.

War Machine....AVENGERS CARDS!

This is a good look at my process. I do my underdrawing with a 4H lead, and I use a Staedtler Lead Holder Mechanical pencil. You can get these kinds of pencils at any hobby or craft store, and often at the office stores in the drafting section.

Anyway, I usually only make the pencil stage this detailed when I know Im going to be inking it later. This was originally for my defunct Avengers month, but like so many other things in April, I wasnt able to get around to it. I will finish it up eventually, but I thought I'd show what I got done so far. These layouts usually take me 15-20 min. depending on how much detail I put in.

War Machine - 324

Another thing I meant to post for Avengers month. I found and cleaned up some
"Avengers Identity Cards"

I've got a blank on here for you to save to your computer. It's pretty easy, just drop your photo (or your kid's photo...) and print it out. Cut out this Blue Avengers Card and the Card you placed your photo on. Place them back to back and Laminate. You can bring them to any office supply store to get laminated. And BOOM! You're an official Avenger!

My superpower is sleeping while sitting up and eating enormous sandwiches.
Turns out I'm just a reserve Avenger.

Commissions and Colors...

Here are the two commissions combined and the first GI JOE Commission colored by Simon Gough! My colorist on Snake Eyes for IDW Publishing. Simon is a beast! He did a fantastic job on this even with it's enormous size. The file size was 600 dpi and like I've said before over 4 ft wide. He said it even slowed his crazy awesome computer down, which has never happened before. He broke it up and just worked on the GI JOE half, as soon as he has the Cobra half done I'll spotlight that as well.

Cobra Commission...

Alright here is the final Cobra commission with these 5 characters. It includes the Dreadnok's Thunder Machine vehicle on the left and a Cobra HISS tank on the right. Again this commission was 14inches tall by 24 inches wide. Each figure was roughly 10-11" tall I think. So when combined with the GI JOE commission this bad boy was 4 ft wide! By far the largest commission I've worked on.

However, I think because I've spotlighted this one on the blog, I just got another commission with ALL of the M.A.S.K. characters. Including all the Figures, their vehicles, the Vehicle Transport, Boulder Hill, etc... I'll be sure to post the progress on that too.

Cobra - Slice...

well...I don't know what to say about this guy. It seemed with each commission there were a couple of characters that were his favorite's that were a little out of place. (ala Ninja Force) Obviously, this was was a personal commission for someone, and when you order yourself some original art, you get to include who you want.

I actually didn't know anything about Slice or the character Dice until I got to draw them in the opening arc of the Snake Eyes series I'm currently drawing. Then as I got to redesign the characters a bit and get to know them some, I really enjoyed the dynamic of Slice and Dice. The bad guy Ninja Duo. Unfortunately (or fortunately for some) he had a short lived run in the current series. Dice makes it through the fight with Snake Eyes, but Ole' Slice wasn't so lucky....oh yeah, spoilers.

Cobra Commission - Slice - 321

Does anyone else think his short sword is awkwardly placed in the package over the artwork?

Here are some of the scenes where Slice and Dice make an appearance in the Snake Eyes book.
