Baroness....

Here's another Baroness sketch done from a previous convention. It's taken awhile, but I generally have a good feel for how I like approaching a Baroness drawing. I get plenty of requests for her, and I have a few commissions of her still to do. If you're waiting, no worries, I will be getting to them! I know it's been quite a while since I posted, but it's simply due to my current workload being so packed. Lots of fun projects, but I'm realizing with a lot of the commercial artwork I'm doing, I can't show any of it publicly. So that keeps me from posting any of the related art or behind the scenes stuff.

I'll have to stick to strictly commissions, daily warm ups or comic related stuff that's already out on shelves.

AoA Sunfire colors

Some great colors over the Sunfire line art I did. This was done by someone on Deviant art, I have to double check and get the name so I can post a link to their page. So line art by me, colors by someone else, but it gives you a look at this character's final color scheme if you're not familiar with Sunfire from the Age of Apocalypse.

Colors on Sunfire - 654

Snake Eyes jam...

Here is a sketch that was part of an 80's jam piece I worked on back at NYCC. Always fun to do. Someone else had drawn the layout for the figure, I think it was loosely based on the Snake Eyes pose from the cover to GI  JOE #1 from IDW.

Snake Eyes - 653

Here is the larger piece...

X-Men Sunfire - AoA...

Here was a recent commission finished, smaller 9x12. It's of Sunfire from the Age of Apocalypse storyline from the X-Men comics in the 90's. I was always a huge fan of this story arc. It was very ambitious at the time and really something I hadn't seen before since I was still relatively new to comics then. I've always been a fan of this character design, it's very fluid and open. Fun commission to do, and anything X-Men related I jump at the chance to draw!

Jean Grey All New X-Men...

Another recent commission, trying to get all these done. Keeping busy with a handful of projects, as usual. Still doing GI JOE Battleground art, occasional toy package art (NERF, Spiderman, etc..) and I'm getting into full swing drawing Castle pages for Marvel based on the ABC TV show. I did the last arc of 5 issues last spring, and I'm doing the next arc now. This will just be a collected trade, so it wont be coming out monthly like the last arc was.

This story arc is written by Cullen Bunn, who I worked with on my Venom issue last year. Already shaping up to be a fun story, more action than the last story, which is always a plus for me.

For this commission sketch, I was super excited, one because I love all things X-Men. But also because the All New X-Men series has been a blast to read! This arc written by Brian Bendis and drawn by Stuart Immonen has been an instant favorite for me. So here's my version of Marvel Girl Jean Grey.

Black Canary...

I've got a few commissions finished I can post up, then I'll be posting up work I've done on the GI JOE Battleground game.

First up is a Black Canary piece I did for Jackie. One of my son's absolute favorite characters, and mine as well. As most people know, I'm not very interested in drawing cheesecake girly poses, I'd rather show what makes the character unique, and especially in women, what makes them strong or independent.

On the original I depicted her "Canary Cry" scream with pencil. It doesn't show up well in the scan, but I liked the effect.

Zarana Colors...

This was a fun commission I did awhile back that I got Simon to color up for me. It's a bookend piece to the Zartan one I did last year for the same guy. I'm looking forward to the few Dreadnok commissions I have lined up, especially after doing these and the few Dreadnoks I've done for the GI JOE Battleground game.

Here's the color and line art for Zarana...

Invincible Colors....

Here is the colors on a recent commission for the character Invincible. I posted the line art and some insight into why I dig the character here in this post:

Colors by the amazing Simon Gough! This book has been an absolute joy to read since it's begining. Written by Robert Kirkman, creator of the Walking Dead, if you enjoy superhero comics, this is a must read!

Shadowcat...

Here's a long overdue smaller commission that I've been able to squeeze in this week. I have loads of posts from NYCC that I need to put up and other commissions I've been able to finish in the last few weeks. I just haven't had much time to get it all uploaded. I'll try and post a few each day to catch up and show some of the work I've been up to.

Right now I'm keeping pretty busy with the penciling chores on ABC's CASTLE for Marvel comics. We're doing the 4th volume that should be out this Spring. Also I'm still doing work on NERF for the Zombie Hunter line that I've recently been showing. I'm also still doing loads of character artwork for the GI JOE Battlegrounds game that I'll post here pretty soon. To date I've drawn 85 character illustrations for the game!!! 30 of those have just been in the past few weeks. So I've got loads more to show.

Until then, here's the long overdue Shadow Cat for Andy.

Arashikage Photo commission and Commission Updates!

So grand prize for my longest running commission goes to my now good friend Kris. I say good friend because he's been very patient, and over the last 4 years we've been in contact about this commission and other GI JOE related stuff. And yes, you read that correctly...4 years.

Arashikage Commission - 636

There's a lot that went into why this took so long, and I won't bore you with it. But it's hands down my longest standing commission, with a lot of start and stop along the way. Right now most of my commissions are a year or two at the most out, and I'm working feverishly catching up on them.

So now on the Commission Update part of my post!

For the most part I've worked on commissions in the order that they came in. The only exception to that is when I go to a convention and I do sketches at the show. The way I've viewed it is that conventions are a break from my deadline work and anything I have at home. It's a chance for people to come to the show in that city and get a chance to get a sketch from me. I can't get to everyone's sketches at the shows I do. So I give everyone who asked for a sketch the choice. Either we skip the sketch and we try it again next year, or I take the commission home and mail it to them when it's done.

Some want the sketch, and are fine with me taking it home. As soon as I go home, I have my deadline schedule that always takes priority, and I fit in commissions and surplus convention sketches as I have time.

I've always been upfront with people that if they want a refund on the commission (when they've paid upfront) I'm always willing to send it asap and take them off the list. I'm not out to sit on anyone's money or take advantage. In fact, in many instances someone has paid for a commission during my last years prices, and since then my commission rates have increased, but I'm doing the quality of art I can produce currently for last year's price.

So ultimately its up to how long someone wants to or is willing to wait, and I don't begrudge anyone for that being a long or short time. I obviously get paid for commissions, but it's not my main source of income. I don't do commissions for the big pay day, I do them because I appreciate that people want an original piece of my art. I do my best to make them affordable for the time I put into them, and it's often much less than my deadline project rates.

That said, I can certainly appreciate that when someone is on a list for a commission, they expect and deserve communication, and to see something produced in a reasonable time (reasonable obviously being subjective to that person and my schedule). I get that.

I'm in the process of doing inventory of all the commissions, convention sketches and/or blank covers that I have, and people want from me. I'm putting them exactly in the order I received them and will do them in that order. The only 2 exceptions to that are on a deadline due to the nature of the commission, and they've agreed to pay my deadline rates to increase production time.

If anyone is done waiting and wants off my list and would like to request a refund (again if applicable) or if they just want off my list (if they haven't paid upfront), again I can take you off, no hard feelings. I hope we can work something out in the future.

After all these current commissions are done and caught up, I will be doing all future commissions through Mike Alexander MGA (More Great Art). You can email him directly here (mga1wars@aol.com)  to request rates and my availability.

Or check out his Comic Art Fans gallery, with examples of my work and other artists that he represents.

I will open my commission list to 3 spots. Then the list will close. My turn around time will be guaranteed within the month. Mike will handle that transaction and hopefully that will help me be more organized going forward so we don't run into this problem again. Also any pre-orders for upcoming conventions will be done through Mike as well. So if you email me, I will simply answer and forward your email to Mike to work out the details.

More than anything, I want to say how much I appreciate your interest in my work and those of you that have been willing to wait (sometimes years) to get a commission piece from me. With every piece I do everything possible to make it the best artwork that I can, and worth your wait.

IF you have questions on your current commission please email me and we can work out the details.

Thanks,
Robert

Thor....

This is another head and torso sketch from a recent convention. While these aren't full body sketches, I generally draw them larger so they still fill up the entire 9x12 drawing space. I dig drawing this version of Thor, it's been one of the best Marvel costume redesigns in the last 10 years.

THOR - 635

Baroness again....

Another fun Baroness piece from the show. I've got a few more Baroness drawings for the IDW Limited books, as well as some owed commissions pieces. Don't worry I've got you on my list ;)

Again the art is done on 9x12, inked with a brush pen and copic multiliners.
