Sketchcard Marathon...Wolverine

Wolverine was a nice change of pace, at this point I've mostly just drawn ninjas that day.

Sketchcard Marathon...Snake Eyes

At this point I'm starting to have to think of new ideas so all my Snake Eyes head and torso sketches dont start looking all the same.

Sketchcard Marathon...Snake Eyes

Like I said, I got a lot of Snake Eyes requests. I was also taking photos of the sketch cards with my phone. Some were blurry because I was trying to take them quick. So you can think of this sketch as this is what Snake Eyes would look like to you after he just roundhouse kicked you in the head...a little blurry.

Sketchcard Marathon....Jinx

This was the sketch card specifically printed for the comic shop. I think this is a great idea for store signings, and a way to advertise for your store.  BTW, ninjas are awesome

Sketchcard marathon... Snake Eyes

I was at Heroes and Fantasies, a comic shop in San Antonio for a store signing. I was signing a copy of GI JOE that I recently did the cover for. So I had quite a few GI Joe requests for these sketch cards. By far, Snake Eyes was the most requested character. Again, these were just quick 10 min sketches, about 3x4 inches or so.

Sketchcard Marathon....Thanos

I'll keep from posting the same into about what these cards were from and keep my descriptions really short, unless there is some background info on the sketch or character I want to share.

Sketchcard marathon...Liono

A few weekends ago I went down to San Antonio to do a store signing at a comic shop. They had sketch cards printed up, and for $5 paid to the store to be given to charity I did a quick sketch on the cards customers would bring to my table. Each of these took 10-20 min depending on the detail. I ended up doing more than 20 of these. I didn't get scans or photos of all of them, but I'll post up the ones I did. I typically don't do quick sketches at a show because I usually just want my best work to represent myself. Still, it was a great chance to support the store and the charity and a nice change of pace to do this many characters in just a few hours.

Some of the cards had this crazy photo frame border, and the others were the official store card.

Kicking it off was Liono from Thundercats!

Lion-O - 572

This is bigger than I actually drew it. The cards are the size of a baseball card, so the drawing space is only a few inches wide.

CrocMaster GI JOE Battleground art...

Hey guess what....MORE GI Joe Battlegrounds art! I know you're surprised. Well everyone is finally finding out why I've been so crazy busy lately. I've been working on the new GI Joe: Battlegrounds game. We get to draw GIJOE and Cobra characters all day long and it's a blast! On top of this I've had other commercial art jobs and comic covers all keeping me busy as well, and it's been pretty insane juggling it all.

But in the end I've produced a crazy amount of work, and it's been on properties that I love, so I'm not complaining! For Croc Master here, you can see in my initial prelim there were just a few pose changes I did to make it a bit more dynamic and add the whip. The prelim was based on the pose they suggested, and then I made a few revisions for the final.

Girl Create-A-Hero....

My son created Dragon Fist, as seen in the last post. My daughter told me how to design her girl character, but that's as far as we got. I think she wanted her name to be SuperPunch Girl or something like that.  (my daughter's 4, so keep that in mind)

SUPER PUNCH GIRL! - 560

Still working on this one.

More Create your Own Character examples...

I've posted these figure templates on my blog before. My kids love doing these with me, where we come up with a backstory and I fill in the details over template figure mannequin.

As always, please feel free to use these at home, schools, or whatever event that you need to keep kids busy or creative! You'd be surprised at how quickly they get into this and come up with some pretty great ideas.

Project Comic Con, in St. Louis this coming Sept. is going to do a kid's Create-A-Hero contest where kids can use my character templates and submit a character of their own. They need to come up with a backstory, a name and description of their powers. They will draw their version of the costume on the template and submit it to the contest. There will be a panel of judges to decide who wins. The convention is setting up different prizes. One of the Grand Prizes is a free sketch from me of the winning kid's character done in full detail!!

Here's an example from my son Connor, he came up with a character called "Dragon Fist". I did the finishing details on the costume but all directed by my son. So this is all his idea.

Dragon Fist - 559

I wrote the list of his powers as Connor dictated, but Connor wrote in his Origin himself. I love that the dragon blood makes this guy more greedy! The character is a total mercenary. He'll do anything for a payday, and hordes his accumulated riches, much like a dragon.

This is the kind of thing we're hoping for in the contest. Any kids planning on being able to make it to Project Comic Con, start brainstorming!

Scarlet revisited...

Here's a Scarlett commission I did quite a long time ago. I think back in 2009. It was just a pencil sketch in someone's sketchbook. I had only vaguely remembered doing it. Then my good friend Shane Simek bought it off eBay for crazy cheap. (I'm not gonna lie, it wasnt by best work by a long shot)

So Shane brings it to me at a convention and asks if I can ink the penciled sketch and kind of "Fix" it in the process. (or in other words...."look you did a crappy job the first time, so I'm giving you a chance to redeem yourself")

I took on the challenge and inked it up at a convention, I think Heroes Con 2012. Shane liked the inks, and I completely redrew her head and face specifically. I like the new version quite a bit better. The only problem is that the now erased drawing of Scarlett's head drawn so hard on the page initially, it left these grooves on the past. Kind of a "ghost" image of the previously terrible drawing.

The impression of the previous lines ran across the lower half of her face, and Shane pointed out that now it made her look like she had a 5 O'Clock shadow..... ugh.

So the only way to fix this new problem was to apply some marker tones over the whole sketch. I knew this would be difficult and something I couldnt do at the con (since I didn't have my markers with me). But also, because the sketch paper this was on was barely better than typing paper. I knew it wouldnt take the markers well, or blend much at all. I kept putting it off because of these issues, but finally this last summer at Heroes Con I took a shot.

Long story, but here's the final result of this sketch that was technically started 6 years ago and only now at a state that I don't mind showing it.

Scarlett - 558

Another Snake Eyes!

Pencils on a very time sensitive Snake Eyes piece. I had the pencils done awhile ago, but I can't prioritize other projects any longer. The pencils here are a bit deceiving since I'll be adding so much more in the inks. There will be lots of blacks in the background, and I'll be drawing in the words on the sign that's on the door. That kind of thing. So I know what kinds of textures and lighting that I'll be adding, but it's not necessary to draw it in with the pencils. Besides Snake Eyes' figure and pose, it all looks relatively blank otherwise.

When you see the inks, it will be quite the opposite. The background will be what's very dark, and it will be Snake Eyes that stands out on the page.

Snake Eyes - 557

Serpentor...THIS I COMMAND!

Finally a commission request for Serpentor. Man, I've been drawing GI JOE for about 6 years now for various projects. This is the first time I've drawn a full Serpentor! crazy....well there are quite a few Joes and Cobra characters I have yet to draw, but you'd have thought I'd would have gotten this request at least. I mean, I've draw the Fridge and Roddy Piper already, but not the Cobra Emperor.

So pencils are done, and I'll be working on the inks on this as part of catching up on my commission list. I'm also steadily working on my IDW signature plates, but I got to finish those up pretty quickly now and make them a priority so that the release date on the books they will be included in doesn't get delayed.  Which means you'll be seeing quite a few of those posted up here in the next couple of weeks.

Snake Eyes commission inks final...

Here's the final inks on the recent commission I started. I finished filling in the blacks on the costume and added in the trees silhouetted in the background. I use a brush and ink for all of that.

Snake Eyes Inks - 555

I also realized I forgot to sign this. I'll do that before I mail it out. I also realized I hadn't drawn Snake Eyes with the signature Cuma Tak Ri knife (designed by the amazing martial artist, Johnny Tsai) I added to his uniform during my Snake Eyes run. So I've got that on his belt for this commission. It's a crazy cool knife, I've got it drawn in the custom leather sheath that I have my own in,  here in the studio.

Snake Eyes colors...

This was a sketch I did for the IDW signature plates recently. Here was a great color job done by Logicfun, over those original inks! You can see his facebook page here and a lot of the other colors he's done.

I especially dig the textures in the explosion Laurence added. Also, that little bit of color in the GI JOE logo really makes it stand out!

My initial line art. Man I love drawing this guy!

Atomic Robo Commission Colors

This was a fun commission to do, and I've had it colored up by Simon Gough. If you haven't read Atomic Robo, I HIGHLY suggest it. Fun, exciting, and very easy to jump into the series at any stage, this book is such a great read. I met Brian and Scott, the creators of Atomic Robo, back at Comic Con the year issue 1 had just come out through the publisher Red 5 comics. I bought a book from them, then  read it that night. The next day I went back to their table and bought 2 more copies for my siblings that I thought would enjoy it. It's only got better as the series has gone on.

You can get all the past volumes of the books at a great discounted rate here at INSTOCK TRADES!
