Daily Sketch: Red Hood DC Comics...

Here's a rare pencil sketch I did. I typically ink all my commissions, unless specifically asked to do pencil. Some people really like how the pencil looks compared to inked commissions, and at times I agree that I like finished pencils more. Not every time, or for every artist, but some artists have phenomenal pencils that have a degree of subtlety and nuance that can't be captured in ink. It's just a different medium, ink is liquid and is limited to what a liquid can do. Just like pencils can't completely reproduce the effects of inks.

I'm not saying I'm one of those artists, in fact I know I'm not. But some collectors enjoy just pencils and this happened to be one specific request. Fun to do, I haven't drawn this character yet.

Daily Sketch: 90's Cable...

This was a fun commission to do. Cable in all his enormous, shoulder-padded glory! this was a sketch I did last month, I have a lot of commissions that have gotten done, that I'll be posting this next month. With doing these recent conventions and catching up on old commissions, I've built up quite a few posts, but haven't had the time to get them put up here. I'll try and get some of these out as consistent as I possibly can.

Daily Sketch: Colossus...

Relatively quick head and torso sketch on an X-Men blank cover of Colossus. As I was working on this I think those around me watching were interested to see how drawing metal works. It kind of looks like I know what I'm doing...but they weren't sure. Then I'd add an extra detail like the lines going around the forms of the arm, and suddenly the arm carries so much more weight. Then I go back and with a white pen add that extra highlight on top of each band of metal to give it a slight bit of depth. When the white cuts through the shadows and highlights of the metal, it give the forms some separation and again, it helps solidify the metallic look.

There were so many times I'd see art growing up and it seemed like magic how someone could recreate a texture or impression of a surface. Ultimately it's a matter of understanding 3 dimensional form and then having a formula that you keep consistent over the surface. Thought it's a bit demystified, I do enjoy trying to find out new techniques and formulas for textures I'm not as comfortable with. Always learning!

Daily Sketch: Cobra Commander...

I'm all set for a productive summer! Normally my summers have not been as productive in the past. My wife is home from work and kids are home during spring break. Since my studio is here at the house, lets just say I get quite a bit more visitors during my work day in the summer. Visitors, while very welcome, can also be distractions that keep me from being productive. But we've got a great plan in place to make this year different, and so far it seems to be working just fine!

I've also got in place a specific plan for handling any remaining commissions before I completely restructure how I'm going to do these going forward. I have some con sketches to finish, a few long standing larger commissions to wrap up and a set of Kickstarter commissions to tackle. When those are all done, I'll officially re-open my commission list, but this time with a guarantee turnaround time!!! I know...minds blown.

So each day this summer, I'll be getting back into my daily warm up grind that worked so well a few years ago. I set a timer before the work day begins and I work on a commission. Each day I will post on my Instagram account the progress I made.

If you have an outstanding commission, that's where you'll go to get updates and progress shots. As soon as that commission is done I'll post the final piece on Facebook and my blog.

I'm positive by keeping up that schedule this summer I'll be fully caught up to open up commissions in the fall!

First up in that line of over due sketches was this Cobra Commander, which was a lot of fun to do! I haven't had a chance to do a commission of this guy in his helmeted glory in quite a while.

Lets see how this new initiative goes, Cheer me on, Give me feedback, Let me know what characters you want to see!
